Cities may be humanity’s greatest invention, and in recent years, the concept of Innovation Cities has been gaining an increasing popularity in China and the rest of the. Science and technology, combined with the infrastructure sector, are considered leaders in the development of a people-centric approach for the design of new sustainable and innovative cities. Moreover, digital economy is growing at a large pace that is seven times the rate of the rest of the economy and much of this growth has been fueled by broadband. Internet and the development of high-speed networks today are having the same impact as the development of electricity and transportation networks a century ago. Consequently, achieving the digital agenda targets would promote the growth of innovative services such as e-health, data-driven manufacturing and ‘smart’ cities, whereby the smart city is a place where traditional networks and services are made more efficient through the use of digital and telecommunication technologies, for the benefit of the inhabitants and businesses.

From this point of view, several cooperation opportunities between Italy and China can be identified in many areas of city/urban management.

Italian Speakers

  • Nicoletta Amodio, Industrial Policies, Confindustria – Research and Innovation platforms for sustainable and beautiful cities
  • Mauro Draoli, Procurement strategies and market innovation, Agency for Digital Italy-AgID – Governing smart cities innovation in a competitive market

The growth of the biotechnology industry in China has long been seen as a strategic task by the central government. Accordingly, the panel will explore the potential Sino-Italian cooperation opportunities in the various biotechnology applications and their integration in different industries (pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, etc.). The growing demand for biotech products, the increasing government support, and the trends toward globalized R&D leave room for further cooperation between Italian companies and research centers and key domestic players in both the public and the private sector. Moreover, new advanced health technologies, such as the development of improved imaging techniques for diagnostic analyses, innovative drug delivery devices and modern medical equipment, represent another interesting topic to discuss. In fact, considering the worldwide increasing interest for such themes, the round table will represent an inspiring occasion for bilateral cooperation between Italian and Chinese companies and/or research centers.

Innovations in the transport sector aim to provide services related to different modes of transport and traffic management, to allow their users to be better informed, and to provide a safer, better coordinated, and ‘smarter’ use of all transport networks. In particular, the concept of railway is going to promote the prosperity, development, as well as the popularization of railway S&T, in addition to stimulating talent in that field.  Delegations from China and Italy seek to explore the different operating models belonging to the railway concept and how they are defined by the convergence and the optimization of different sectors and sub-sectors, while paying specific attention to the development of new technologies for high speed trains.
