An Ocean of amazing adventures and a Sea for fun! June 9th and 10th, 2018

World Ocean Day Tribute

On June 8, the World Ocean Day is celebrated worldwide. The hydrosphere covers more than two-thirds of our entire planet, so much so that it refers to the planet Earth as the “Blue Planet”.These huge stretches of water are a resource to be protected: they represent the “home” of many forms of life; they play essential roles in the cycles of matter and energy for our Planet and provide us with so many necessary kind of food in our diets. At Città della Scienza we will celebrate the value of these marine ecosystems with activities, workshops and themed guided tours not to be missed!

Look at the program!

Città della Scienza keeps working jointly with the Anton Dohrn Napoli Zoological Station for the celebration of the World Oceans Day! On Saturday, June 9th, do not miss the opportunity to meet the researchers and discover together “The Sea as a resource for care and well-being“. There will be many research activities illustrated to the public related to sampling, isolation and maintenance of marine species of biotechnological interest (especially microalgae), preparation of chemical extracts, testing the possible bioactivity of extracts on human models and the development of new products from marine organisms for human care and well-being. And yet, many educational games and fun activities on the marine world await you at the Science Tastings  for today’s children, researchers tomorrow’s researchers.

Who loves the sea more than the sailors? Probably nobody! They are “seafarers” willing to face the dangers and pitfalls of the vast expanse of blue, staying away from home for months, just to complete their missions. On this day of celebration of the blue gold of our planet, feel yourself a skilled sailor! Do not miss the appointment with “20000 leagues under the seas“. Try your hand at building knots and moorings and challenge your friends with the international nautical alphabet and the morse alphabet! Unleash a sailor in you!
Ocean is sea, but don’t forget the sand! Everyone as a child liked to create incredible sand castles on the beach, fancy structures that punctually took the sea or collapsed. But for today’s children or for those who have never forgotten the child inside each of us, there is a way to build sand castles everywhere, without getting dirty and reshaping forever: it’s called kinetic sand and it’s a real magic. Try our secret recipe of – Homemade kinetic sand - and you will not be able to do without it!
Probably a few billion, that is, a few thousand billion, but it is a very questionable estimate: the marine species so far described by taxonomists go from 250.000 to 274.000. However, since the total number of species in the world is about 1.8 million, it is undoubted that the seas contain much more: at least 1.4-1.6 million species. And each of these can count also millions of specimens. Of course, we will not have the opportunity to talk about all of them, but in the company of an expert guide, we will go to the discovery of marine creatures take shape in a fascinating clay workshop, to tell the sea and its treasures in an interactive and engaging way. With the activity “Who goes for these seas“.
And if we talk about marine animals, with the heat and the desire of summer that grows, immediately we can think of: jellyfish! Watching a jelly-like and transparent jellyfish waving in water is a fascinating sight, yes, but at the same time it can scare … Thanks to this laboratory, we will deepen the biology of these unique animals, debunking myths and prejudices, and we will build, step by step, with reuse and recycle materials, a model of jellyfish inside a plastic bottle. It will also be an opportunity to understand how plastic represents a serious threat to the marine ecosystem. Do not miss “A Jellyfish in a Bottle“. With our hands, we will have thus manufactured a  sea corner to take home!

Technology is the future! By integrating new technologies with good manual skills, discover with your parents Nintendo Labo: a new piece of cardboard in something different, a motorbike, a fishing rod, a plane or whatever comes to mind! Then, add a Nintendo Switch  console to bring them to life and enjoyment is guaranteed! Win a race, catch a fish, play … With Nintendo Labo, everyone can experience the joy of building, playing and discovering. Have fun watching your creations: you could even invent new ways to play with Toy-Con! Visit the exhibition dedicated to the sea! Find out which new fish, molluscs and crustaceans live in our tanks following the guided tour  Marine Ecosystems

During the guide, you will have the opportunity to caress some marine organisms in our Touch pool. What an emotion! For the little ones, “Create your marine animals” a laboratory where fish shapes are colored, inventing new species, and then, as for “magic”, make them appear and swim in a large virtual aquarium.

BIT is back the most exhibit loved by adults and children! BIT! You do not know him? Come and meet him, he will answer all your scientific curiosities and not only … Where have you been in this time? What adventures will he tell you? Do not miss this appointment with “Talk to BIT”.

Take part in the guided tour by “Bugs & CO” the new exhibition space dedicated to the spectacular world of insects and more. For every man on Earth there are over 150 million insects. “The six-legged giants” have conquered almost all the habitats of our planet …. it’s time to start getting to know them better. Beyond the visits they guide a Corporea the first interactive museum on the Human Body in Italy, the 2D show From the Earth to the Universe – From the Earth to the Universe” to discover the most important theories elaborated by man during the time in the astronomical field up to the future perspectives, and for 3D lovers, “Robot Explorers” is waiting for you to travel together, lander and orbiter inside our solar system. Come and discover the rich program! We are waiting for you in many!
