Campania confirms itself as an international excellence on the cultural and scientific scene, adding a new prestigious UNESCO recognition to its already rich heritage. Città della Scienza has been selected for an initiative as part of UNESCO’s Decade of Science, as listed on the National Commission for UNESCO website.
The project aims to strengthen citizens’ scientific awareness, with a special focus on the younger generation, to address the urgent challenges of climate change. In line with the goals of the Decade of Science, the initiative will promote innovative solutions through interactive labs, immersive exhibits and workshops with experts. The goal is to develop a critical approach to scientific information, countering misinformation and promoting sustainable lifestyles. Concrete tools will be provided to reduce environmental impacts and actively engage the community in climate change mitigation and adaptation actions.
This recognition is part of a long tradition of UNESCO success for Campania, which boasts thirteen World Heritage sites and elements. These include the historic center of Naples, the archaeological areas of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the Royal Palace of Caserta and the Amalfi Coast, as well as important intangible cultural heritage elements such as the art of Neapolitan pizza makers and the Mediterranean diet. The Campania region’s commitment to the conservation and enhancement of its heritage through sustainable and technologically advanced approaches is further evidenced by the recent inclusion of the Archaeological Park of Baia in the UNESCO Register of Good Practices for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage.
Naples is confirmed as a crucial reference point in the international debate on the protection of cultural and scientific heritage, having recently hosted the UNESCO conference “Cultural Heritage in the 21st Century,” with the participation of representatives from more than 190 member states.
Founded with the aim of bridging the gap between science and society, Città della Scienza stands out as a model of science popularization, thanks to an engaging and accessible mode of communication designed especially for young people to stimulate their curiosity, informed choices and creativity. As part of the UNESCO-led International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development (2024-2033), Città della Scienza will celebrate World Earth Day (April 22) with workshops, meetings with experts and demonstrations with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of adopting environmentally sustainable behaviors.
The Decade, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, aims to promote global collaboration across the sciences for a sustainable future, recognizing science as a fundamental common good for the well-being of humanity and the preservation of the planet.
Against this backdrop, Città della Scienza will dedicate the long weekend of April 25-27 to the Earth and climate change with the initiative “I DO. BE PART OF THE CHANGE, “ a rich program of interactive workshop activities for all ages, inviting visitors to become protagonists of change through guided tours of the Anthropocene exhibition and engaging hands-on, educational experiences.
UNESCO’s approval of the Città della Scienza initiative represents a significant step toward a more informed and responsible society. Thanks to projects like this, Campania is confirmed as a region at the forefront, capable of combining the richness of its historical heritage with scientific and technological innovation, contributing concretely to building a more sustainable future for new generations.
