In a memorable scene in the first film of the Star Wars saga, the robot R2-D2 projects a hologram of Princess Leia begging Obi Wan Kenobi to help her against the Empire. The year was 1977 and just six years had passed since the Nobel Prize was awarded to the brilliant Hungarian physicist Dennis Gabor “for his invention and development of the holographic method,” which he theorized in the early 1950s. Let’s find out together how holograms work and how to build a projector in the classroom to make one.
