from February 22, the exhibition “Fridtjof Nansen: explorer, scientist and benefactor of mankind”

At the opening, after the greetings of the President of the Città della Scienza, Vittorio Silvestrini, were present: Luigi Nicolais, president of the CNR and the Fram Anne Rief Museaum Oslo, Fiorella Liotto, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, moderate Budillon Giorgio, professor of ‘University of Naples’ Parthenope.

Evidence and relevance of his thought and of his scientific insights into his work in Naples and in the research of the CNR

The original exhibition, composed of panels and exhibits recovered in Greenland  in the Inuit territory by the Fridtjof Nansen in 1882, was on display until June 2012 in various Italian museums such as the Natural History Museum of Milan, the Regional Museum of Natural Sciences of Turin and then the Museum of L’Aquila.

In 2013, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in collaboration with the CNR – Department of Earth System Science and Technology for the Environment have created an enlargement of the exhibition with interactive contributions integrating and finding place at Città della Scienza of Naples, where will be exhibited from February to May. The exhibition was divided into themed areas highlighting the  relevance thought of Fridtjof Nansen, comparing his work with that of other great Arctic explorers (eg, Amundsen and Nobile). The city of Naples has also been very important  in the scientist’s life :  infact he “rented” a desk at the Zoological Station A. Dohrn, where he was a guest for few months in 1886. The exhibition deals with topical issues in the polar areas (climate change, exploitation of energy resources, the navigation of the Arctic Ocean, etc..) and during the exhibition period there will take place in-depth seminars and conferences with and national and international experts and  researchers.

Mooreover ,to respond to an increasingly demanding public, the exhibition will also feature films and historical objects supported by models and reconstructions.

Will be display a model of the ship FRAM, used both by Fridtjof Nansen and other polar explorers, comparing it to a military ship developed and studied at the Institute of CNR (INSEAN) through films relating to construction techniques. The Association of Polar Circle, due to its experience with the preparation of the original show, will be the reference point for the realization of the exhibition.
