This year FameLab, the scientific talent show created by Cheltenham Science Festival (United Kingdom) and promoted in different countries by the British Council, comes in Italy in collaboration with Perugia Science Fest, Museo delle Scienze di Trento, Fondazione IDIS – Città della Scienza and Formica Blu from Bologna.

What is FameLab?

FameLab is an open contest for young scientists and researchers, a challenge in the field of science popularization: three minutes for explaining a scientific issue they choose. Like the famous TV talent shows, partecipants are judged by a panel of experts from the world of science and communication. After the regional and national selections, the best one will take part in the international final during the Cheltenham Science Festival, in United Kingdom, in the presence of the audience and in live streaming, with a large media coverage.

How FameLab works?

In Naples, Perugia, Bologna and Trento, during the month of March 2012, there are the REGIONAL SELECTIONS. Every partecipant will have 3 minutes for presenting a free-choice scientific issue in Italian. He/she can use just small objects – the ones that can get in a pocket – for aiding to visualize the notions they explain. PowerPoint presentations are not accepted.

A video of every presentation will be posted on the project’s websites and on Youtube. The eight finalists – two from every regional selection – will take part in a two-day masterclass (Perugia, April 14-15), for developing their communication skills and deepening the basic elements of science popularization. They will enter, moreover, in the NATIONAL FINAL in Perugia the next 4th of May, a special event of Perugia Science Fest. The winner will be the Italian representative at the INTERNATIONAL FINAL in Cheltenham, United Kingdom, on June, 11 and 12. Members of the panel are important personalities from the world of science and media.

Who can enter the contest?

The contest is open to public and private researchers, scientists, university students, teachers, all the people who love science and technology… and who are more then 18 years old.

The partecipation is forbidden for: PR or communicators, artists, performers, museum or science centre staff, journalists, not-specialized teachers, people who work in the field of social science.

Day’s schedule

  • Registration from 10 to 11 am.
  • Selections from 11 am to 4 pm (open to Science Centre’s visitors)
  • Regional final from 4 pm
