Scientists and researchers from both shores of the Mediterranean, together with the journalist Giuliana Sgrena, well known for her reports in the Arab countries and in war zones, will take part in an event at Città della Scienza on 30 May, at 5 p.m., for a panel open to the public on the issue of women’s contribution to research. At he round table will also take part Orio Ikebe from the UNESCO Office in Cairo, an expert on gender policies in Mediterranean countries.

The debate will be held at the end of the session of discussion on the situation of women in science in Europe and in the southern shore of the Mediterranean, with the participation of the main institutional representatives and civil society.

The meeting, aimed at raising awareness on the state of women in different fields of research in these countries, is promoted within the European project SHEMERA (SHE Euro Mediterranean Research). The project aims to analyze the contribution of women in research in Third Countries of the Mediterranean (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine), by connecting it to the efforts already made in this field in Europe. The project consists of a collection of statistical data on the vertical and horizontal discrimination, as well as an identification of policies and positive actions that promote women in research, starting from the analysis of the available literature on the gender dimension . The research activity is accompanied by networking activities at the national level that take place in each country of the southern Mediterranean where Task Forces and Thematic workshops have been activated to discuss policies and measures to be taken. Responding to the general aims of the project SHEMERA, the meeting is open to all women, researchers or institutions engaged in research and affirmation of gender equality. The panel will be held in English.
