SHANGHAI (18 November)

Shanghai, considered the economic heart of China, has always been the symbol of reforming process and opening of China, as well as the pioneer of Country’s modernization.

It is one of the four direct-controlled municipalities of the People’s Republic of China, with a population of more than 24 million. It is a global financial center, and a transport hub with the world’s busiest container port. Located in the Yangtze River Delta in East China, Shanghai sits on the south edge of the mouth of the Yangtze in the middle portion of the Chinese coast.

Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to European recognition of its favorable port location and economic potential. The city then flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became the undisputed financial hub of the Asia Pacific in the 1930s. In 1990s the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in an intense re-development of the city, aiding the return of finance and foreign investment to the city: it has been described as the “showpiece” of the booming economy of mainland China.

Shanghai is the commercial and financial center of mainland China. In September 2013, with the backing of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang the city launched the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free-Trade Zone-the first free-trade zone in mainland China. The Zone introduced a number of pilot reforms designed to create a preferential environment for foreign investment. As a consequence, a large number of industrial zones grew in the city, including Shanghai Hongqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone, Jinqiao Export Economic Processing Zone, Minhang Economic and Technological Development Zone, and Shanghai Caohejing High-Tech Development Zone.
